Common Knowledge
A tempered warrior from the Azim Steppe, Nomin tal Kheeriin is a savior of her people, and a runaway from the lands she once called home in an effort to keep those she cares about from falling into further harm. With a keen eye, she wields a bow, but has the forced training of hand-to-hand and spear-work under her belt. Having sailed the seas from the docks of Kugane, she embarked upon a journey she could not have foreseen. Now hailed as the Warrior of Light, and having many more impressive feats that she could have never predicted attributed to her, she ventures forth as a symbol of hope.
History
Pre-MSQ
Born to the tribe of Tumet, Nomin was only referred to as 'okhin' or 'khüükhed' – an indicator of a female child who bore no name. Like those before her, as is tradition of the Tumet, Nomin was tied to a sacred dawn pine and was made to free herself in order to prove herself worthy of the tribe and of a name. Over the course of several bells, Nomin eventually freed herself through the use of a crudely fashioned copper decoration that adorned her gutal. After freeing herself, she resolved to free those who had given up on the trial, something within her telling her that it was simply the right thing to do.
With the pain of multiple losses weighing heavy upon her after several summers of knowing other children like her, and with the disdain she often felt for the markings on her scales, Nomin turned instead to make her journey toward the Qestir settlement and traders' gathering hub of Reunion. When she stood before the eastern entrance to Reunion, Nomin happily declared: “My name is Nomin! And I am worthy!”
Upon arrival into Reunion, Nomin was taken into the care of a Sagahl merchant who was concerned about the fact that she was unattended. She was later taken into his family, where Nomin learned his name was Esenaij, and that he had a sister who went by the name of Bayarmaa. Here, Nomin integrated into the family rather happily, though held onto the idea that she would become a 'child of the Steppe' versus swearing herself to any one tribe over another regardless of her acceptance into them or not. However, she formed a bond with Bayarmaa and Esenaij, feeling very comfortable within the Sagahl. Especially after she started to get to know more of the members of the tribe, and even made friends her age that she did not have to worry about leaving her in some annual tradition.
Among the Sagahl, and through Bayarmaa's pestering of Esenaij, Nomin got to experience meeting a myriad of tribes as well as learn a number of helpful tricks, or cultural practices that she would later carry along with her. Nomin was even gifted her first weapons as well as the knowledge in how to use them; namely the bow and the art of archery, her trainers being Esenaij and a friend of his by the name of Daritai. Despite all of this, however, a time came where the Sagahl were set upon by the Jhungid, and a good handful of their members were forced into their tribe. Among the numbers of the Sagahl that were taken in, Nomin was upon them. She had bore witness to the death of her adoptive brother before her kidnap, molding her resolve and intentions from that point forward as she then lived among the Jhungid.
In the summers during her time with the Jhungid, Nomin was made to learn more than the art of archery. Within the training she was forced to endure, Nomin learned how to fight within close quarters with only her hands and feet. She learned how to wield a spear, ensuring she could fight with a weapon in close range. Nomin even honed her abilities with a bow and arrow, expanding upon what she learned prior from her time with Esenaij and Daritai. It was in her sixteenth summer, when she was made to fight her first conflict against the Kharlu, that Nomin finally struck at the Jhungid. She used the chaos of the battle to return to the Jhungid Orda in order to set fire to their ger and supply tents to hamper them before urging the Sagahl that she could find to flee. Once she was satisfied, she set out not long after them.
Once meeting back with the Sagahl, Nomin was given her limbal rings from her family's friend, Turakina. This was to mark her belated coming of age, but it also served as recognition that Nomin is the savior of their people who were forcibly displaced and absorbed into the Jhungid. Not long after, Nomin departed from the Sagahl, discarding the tribal name and beginning her journey across the steppe in earnest to learn more, as well as prepare herself to one day journey beyond it.
It was during Nomin's nineteenth summer that she eventually made her way to Kugane. Then, in her twenty-first summer, she sailed from Kugane to Eorzea in order to embark on a completely new journey filled with new sights, sounds, people, and experiences.
A Realm Reborn
Fresh off from her voyage from Kugane to Limsa Lominsa, Nomin's first priority was getting to know the lay of the land and its people. In Limsa Lominsa, she found many interesting things, though one that stood out to her above all: an advertisement within the Hawkers' Alley that spoke of learning the skills and art of carpentry at the Carpenters' Guild in Gridania. With this new goal of learning carpentry and working with wood to build new things, Nomin prepared for a trip to Gridania. During this trip, she became acquainted with two young elezen twins named Alphinaud and Alisaie.
Though the twins spoke little to her, Nomin found herself making sure that they were at least well taken care of and watched over – a certain protectiveness arising due to seeing how young they looked, and the fact that they were venturing alone. They went their separate ways, however, once they finally crossed the border of Thanalan and arrived in Gridania. As Nomin explored Gridania and was directed toward the Carline Canopy, she was often confused for an Adventurer. This seemed to have been in part due to the fact that she openly carried her weapons around with her and was very clearly not native to the land.
Before Nomin could register with the Carpenters' Guild, she was urged to first register with one of either the Lancers', Conjurers', or Archers' Guilds by Mother Miounne. Nomin did as she was asked, opting for the Lancers' Guild and becoming acquainted with the guild master, Ywain Deepwell. Though Nomin disagreed with some of the views on a surface level that Ywain posited, Nomin challenged his statements, earning what seemed to be a modicum of respect upon these first impressions of one another. So started her continued training in honing her art with the lance as she progressed and did a number of menial tasks about Gridania and the Black Shroud before Miounne gave her permission to seek out the Disciple of Hand and Land guilds within the city.
With Nomin's many deeds and merits that earned her the attention of Elder Seedseer Kan-E-Senna, she became an envoy of Gridania and was set to embark on a trip to the other city-states in order to bring Kan-E-Senna's letters to Merlwyb Boefhiswyn and Raubahn Aldynn. This allowed Nomin the chance to see more of Eorzea and what it had to offer in terms of people, cultures, and food – which was all appreciated as much as seeing new vistas for herself. When she eventually returned to Gridania, Nomin made the acquaintance of a scholarly miqo'to who said she was from the island nation of Sharlayan, Lorha Keipah.
Heavensward
Cold, feeling betrayed, and only in the company of Tatatu and Alphinaud, Nomin reluctantly sought sanctuary with Haurchefant's aid in Ishgard, where their allegiance remained largely with themselves rather than the rest of Eorzea. Thanks to Haurchefant, Nomin could take some solace in the fact that both Alphinaud and Tataru could remain safe within the walls of Ishgard rather than wrongfully convicted for crimes they had no part of in Ul'dah.

Relationships
Family
Estinien Varlineau
Though romantically together and later married, both Nomin and Estinien had a very rocky start to what their relationship is now. Originally, Nomin had reluctantly agreed to help find and bring back Estinien more as a favor to Ywain and his positive relationship with Alberic more than as a favor to Ishgard and Alberic himself. Their initial meeting had not gone as planned, especially with Estinien giving Nomin barely any time to interject nor have a say within their brief encounter before the Eye of Nidhogg that he possessed reacted to her presence and caused him to leave just as quickly as he appeared.
In addition to his general brusque nature, Estinien seemed to view Nomin as nothing more than a heretic due to his views regarding the Dravanians, leading to a number of disagreements and the refusal to see eye-to-eye from Nomin. This caused their venture throughout Coerthas and the Dravanian Hinterlands. This view would fail to change until, at last, Estinien had laid Nidhogg to rest, and his armor was stained red. Though the path to reconciliation was not in sight for either of them at first, Estinien falling under Nidhogg's thrall had halted any ideation of the very notion as views and actions had to shift in order to prevent further ruination of either Ishgard or Estinien himself.
With Alphinaud's help, he and Nomin pried the Eyes of Nidhogg from Estinien's person, earning scars along their hands and arms to show for it. As the three of them were made to recover, Estinien more than the other two, the steps to building a bridge of friendship between he and Nomin started with a simple expression of desire: “I hope we can become friends, Estinien. For Alphinaud's sake at the very least.”
Nomin was under the impression that she would never cross paths with Estinien again when she heard that he had escaped the care of the infirmary and its chirurgeons, and she was fine with that for the most part. During her venture back to the Azim Steppe with Orn Khai in tow, however, is when Nomin met with Estinien once more. This was something that surprised Nomin – what surprised her more was how much more at ease he was, and how much easier it was to speak with him. During the time they were together after freeing Faunehm, Nomin and Estinien got to speak more at length with one another, effectively burying the hatchet that had remained between them.
They would not meet again until the battle at Ghimlyt Dark. Having spied a fallen Nomin, Estinien fended off what would have been a fatal blow from the visage of Zenos. Once Zenos departed, Estinien plucked Nomin from the battlefield, getting her to safety. In her delirium, she vaguely made out being carried by Estinien and having a discussion with her. Most of her memories were muddy, and she mostly remembers waking up in Ishgard under Aymeric's care. This is where she was told by Aymeric that Estinien was indeed the one who demanded her safety, and her memories started to solidify the events of the aftermath.
Left to contemplate this and her own feelings regarding the matter, Nomin did her best to brush it off. Only when Nomin was whisked away to the First did she dwell on the events further, thoughts of Estinien and her being with him plaguing her mind during her downtime. Having done her best to prevent these thoughts from interfering with her duty on the First, it was when she returned to the Source that Nomin felt her heart flutter when she saw Estinien once more. She was glad that she could see him again, having realized that he was perhaps one of the only people who could see and understand her – what experiences she went through and had shape her. Following their reunion in Mor Dhona, the friendship that Nomin and Estinien nurtured began to slowly blossom into something a little deeper.
By the time preparation for traveling out to the edge of the universe had been set in motion, the night that Estinien approached Nomin the night before their voyage was the night that Nomin stopped him from leaving. Deciding that she could not allow him to slip through her fingers after realizing that she had fallen in love with him, Nomin confessed all her feelings to him. Though met with the question on if she was sure if she wanted to spend her life with him, Nomin declared 'yes,' sealing the start of their romantic relationship with one another.
Cyrielle Varlineau
Also given the name 'Bayarmaa' as homage to Nomin's adoptive elder sister, Cyrielle is technically Nomin and Estinien's eldest as the first of the twins who were born.
Fleurette Varlineau
Also given the name 'Chotan' as homage to one of Nomin's first friends on the Steppe, Fleurette is Nomin and Estinien's second born of the twins.
Hamignant Varlineau
Also given the name 'Esenaij' as homage to Nomin's adoptive elder brother, Hamignant is Nomin and Estinien's youngest child.
Bayarmaa of Sagahl
One of the first people that Nomin attached to when she was brought into the Sagahl, Nomin enjoyed having an older sister figure in her life. Bayarmaa was also all too happy to have Nomin as a part of their family, and went out of her way to help teach Nomin a number of things to help get her prepared for her eventual growth into adulthood. Bayarmaa taught Nomin the overall ways of the Sagahl, informing her and showing her how the Sagahl cared for the land so that the land may provide its bounty for them in return.
Esenaij of Sagahl
Esenaij was the Sagahli merchant that Nomin first ran into when she entered into Reunion. Having been made to sit and wait at the stall with the promise of Azim strawberries to snack upon, Esenaij initially waited for Tumeti parents to come claim their child. However, with the mention of the Tumeti trial and Nomin's adamant insistence that she was there alone, Esenaij eventually relented. He resolved to bring Nomin somewhere safe where she could be cared for. This place was the Sagahl Iloh and within the ger where he and his sister, Bayarmaa, resided.

Trivia
- There was once a time where Tank roles were heavily considered for Nomin. Namely that of Gunbreaker and Paladin. They were later scrapped, as they made no sense with Nomin's general fighting style and preference.
- A short story from FFXIV Write 2023 exists where Nomin is exploring the idea of becoming a Gunbreaker, and was written before the idea was scrapped completely.
- Likewise, the idea of White Mage was also considered for Nomin, but under a different name that fit the Mongolian-coding of the Xaela of the Azim Steppe: abĵiya.
- Other considerations included Machinist, Dancer, and Sage.
- In order to balance out Nomin and her own fighting preferences, characters have been made over time in order to serve as her friends, foils, and as party members to flesh out her adventuring forays. Her primary party ARR onward consists of R'ayzel Mhazu, Ralne Dalduos, and Lorha Keipah. Nomin's primary party upon the Steppe consists of Arik of Dotharl, Jargal of Qalli, and Cotota of Qerel.
- Nomin was never intended to have a ship, it actually just kind of ended up happening over the course of Endwalker and seeing how compatible Nomin and Estinien actually were after his path of finding himself and becoming comfortable in reclaiming himself.
