Common Knowledge

Altais is part of a group of Warriors of Light known as Solar who work with the Scions. She's not the easiest person to get along with, a rough life has led her to be slow to trust and not particularly polite. Show her you're strong and independent and you can at least earn her respect. She's known for her terrifying endurance, years of fighting and suffering taught her to basically ignore pain. She can get up and keep fighting with horrifying wounds until her body forces her to pass out. In addition to somehow becoming a world hero, she's also a masterful weapons engineer, looking into combining Garlean magitek with the magic non-Garleans like herself are capable of. Her talents easily rival those of Cid, though she's interested in building far more deadly things than he is. Her focus is ever and always on growing stronger, both for herself and for her friends. Her loyalty is hard to earn, and it took Solar a long time to gain it but once built it's unshakable as long as she's not betrayed.

Born on the Azim Steppe with a different name, she left there eventually to get away from her family and seek strength in the world beyond it. Her mother was a terrible person, and insisted her kids should never trust anyone. This ended up being instilled the hard way when Altais’s older sister was convinced by their mother’s ramblings and stuck a knife in the young Xaela when she least expected it. This betrayal led to Altais spending her childhood alone, and she would continue to travel by herself trusting no one until she met Solar. Somehow her fellow Warriors of Light managed to get through to her over time, and she’s determined to protect them now because at long last she has something really worth fighting for.

History

Pre-MSQ

Most of her life was spent traveling the Far East alone with her Yol Sorvi once she left the Steppe. She left her homeland seeking strength and never looked back. Pressure from the Garleans had her planning to leave the East around when the Calamity hit Eorzea, but planning such a trip with Sorvi was difficult. After a scrap with the Garleans, the citizens who the Empire punished for her defiance rallied against her and Sorvi was killed in the ensuing struggle. Alone and with nothing left to lose, she snuck onto a ship bound for Eorzea with only her bow and the clothes on her back. It was in Eorzea she took the name Altais, not wanting to be found by anyone who knew her from the Steppe or the Far East.

A Realm Reborn

Altais started doing adventurer work in Eorzea to keep herself alive and continue to push her strength in battle. Through this she was introduced to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn who recognized her Echo, and a small group of other similarly gifted adventures who formed the primal slaying group Solar. She joined Solar figuring fighting primals was the perfect way to grow stronger, but she continued not trust anyone. For perhaps the first time in her life, people were just genuinely kind to her, and she didn't know what to make of it. Still, she was convinced she was only around for her usefulness. It wasn't until everyone reconnected at Camp Dragonhead after the bloody banquet that she realized these people really did care about her, and with that Solar and the Scions earned her loyalty.

Heavensward

Ishgard was not a kind place for an Au Ra. Their hatred of dragons led to a general dislike of Altais, and the cold left her with frozen scales almost all the time. But eventually she would find her place in the manufactory. Stephanivien ran into her out on the streets one day, and she initially only went with him because it looked warm inside. Altais ended up finding her first ever hobby here, learning to build and modify weaponry, justifying her interest with how useful it was. She started wielding her custom firearms and became a MCH, naming her primary weapon Ukhel. Nidhogg would eventually leave her with a nasty scar across her back, but Altais and the rest of Solar ended the Dragonsong war once and for all.

Stormblood

Not long after arriving in Rhalgr's Reach, Altais found herself a new friend. While out testing her weapons, a wild griffin showed up to feast on the animals she'd shot and was planning to cook for herself. The griffin reminds her of her old companion, and she ends up dueling him much like the Xaela do with the Yol and befriending him that way. Altais named her new mount Mercury, and from that day on he would be her constant companion as she traveled. Fate would soon draw her back to the Far East and her homeland on the Steppe despite her never wanting to return. She struggled to deal with this, and often disappeared on Solar to soar across the Steppe with Mercury alone. Back there, where everything had began it was easy to question her devotion to Solar and wonder if she'd made the right choice trusting them and sticking with them. This would culminate when Altais ran into her mother and sister again for the first time in years. Her family believed her to be weak for her trust in others, but Altais chose to stand by the choices she made and swore to prove it by winning the Naadam. If she won all the Xaela, including her old tribe, would follow her into battle against the Garleans. Resolved, she came clean to Solar about her past and what she had sworn to do, and they were willing to support her all the way. She challenged Bardam's Mettle for the second time in her life, but instead of a Yol it was Mercury who leapt ahead to challenge her, as if sensing what was supposed to happen. She flew in the Naadam atop her white griffin and won the competition with Solar and the Mol tribe at her side. It was after this win she took on the last name Narluu, based on Solar for they were her tribe now. She would lead the Xaela troops for the attack on Doma Castle before returning to Ala Mhigo with her friends to finish things there.

Shadowbringers

Being summoned to the First caused Altais's gun to break. While she was quite angry at the Exarch about it, she took the chance to build something new. Taking inspiration from both the Garlean tech she'd studied and the Bozjan gunblade techniques Thancred had picked up, she built herself a gunblade of her own named Tasralgi. Tasralgi was heavily customized throughout her adventures on the First, and could serve as a long range firearm as well as a close range gunblade using aether charged ammo for both. Her aether had always leaned towards fire and that was the aspect her gunblade was imbued with until she absorbed a Lightwarden, at which point it shifted to light. She came the closest she ever has to falling apart when she was slowly turning into a Lightwarden and unable to stop it from happening, it made her irritable and reckless and this would come back to bite her later on.

Solar initially chose her to send for the investigation into the Garleans' weapon project, her background in engineering and weaponry making her the perfect fit. After fighting the ruby weapon, it became clear the situation was more than they'd thought, and backup was quickly called in to help her. She helped Cid design and build the G-Warrior, and was the one to pilot it. During this time, she was also in contact with the people studying summoning magic, and started trying to integrate it into her weaponry. Something went wrong, and the core of her weapon wasn't enough to contain Bahamut's power causing it to flow into her body dangerously. The reckless fear from nearly becoming a lightwarden never left her, and despite knowing it was dangerous Bahamut's power felt so potent she kept using the faulty weapon since it made her feel so strong. This would all culminate disastrously, when too much of the primal's power drawn into her body caused an actual summoning of Bahamut onto herself. It was a far cry from the previous incarnation of the primal, her own fears and doubts mixed in with the aether of the original to create a new incarnation of the draconic primal. Solar had to fight her in her Bahamut form to subdue the primal, and when they found out how it happened they were quite upset with her for her recklessness. She would now have to live with the consequences, the primal was a part of her now and he would always be there trying to take control and destroy everything.

Endwalker

The end of the world waits for no one, and despite being stuck with a newly summoned violent primal in her head, Altais is still needed fighting against the coming of the Final Days. Containing Bahamut is a struggle, every hint of fear or doubt that flashed in Altais's mind caused him to try and take control, insisting the only way to truly be safe to destroy everyone else. It's a strange twisted mix of her own mindset she'd tried to escape, and the original primal's need for raw destruction. Garlemald was particularly difficult, but it wasn't until the final days truly arrived that Bahamut finally broke free, transforming Altais into her primal form to terrorize Thavnair alongside the the beasts that already ravaged it. It was awful timing, and ultimately required Solar's leader, Zelda, to call on Odin's power to subdue the primal while also protecting the people from the Final Days. Altais knew she needed to make more of an effort to stop her mistake from hindering Solar's efforts, so she tried to confront her inner demons. The original Bahamut had been a noble dragon, and Altais managed to appeal to whatever trace remained of him and make a deal: prove that she isn't weak as is and prove that she is really a hero and Bahamut will work alongside her instead of trying to claim their shared body for himself. This deal pitted Altais against her greatest self doubts, the lingering sense of helplessness from the Lightwarden situation and the mindset she's always carried that she's not a hero like the others are since she's done so much wrong in her life. Still, it meant Bahamut would take a step back and let her try to prove those doubts wrong before trying anything again. For the remainder of Endwalker, the primal would be watching and waiting. With far less risk of becoming a murderous primal, Altais is able to join in investigating the Final Days, even traveling through time to uncover their source and learning to accept who she is through it all. Still, it isn't until she stood at the very edge of the universe facing the incarnation of despair itself that it fell into place. She was strong enough to stand here after traveling through time and space and continuing on through loss after loss in Ultima Thule, and who other than a hero would travel this far and challenge such an entity? Bahamut senses the final true shift in her mindset and offers her his power. Altais fights the final battle in her primal form, controlling it for the first time. Still, such power has consequences and it will never be something she can use often as it draws directly on her aether and corrupts it further each time she taps into this power. Some scales on her right forearm already turned bluish at the edges and glow that color when she channels Bahamut's power.

The recent experiences had taught Altais to care more about herself, and in the time after returning from Ultima Thule, she finds herself trying to learn to relax and not be a soldier all the time. It's a long road ahead and she'll never be like everyone else, but maybe she can continue to build a life she's truly happy with.

Relationships

Solar
Though Altais was slow to trust them initially as she always is, Solar has since become her family and her tribe. Her fellow Warriors of Light helped her find the right path in life, and she will always be grateful to them for all they've done. Each and every one of them has earned her loyalty and she will fight fiercely for their cause.

The Scions
While not quite family in the same way Solar is, the Scions are all Altais's good friends having earned her trust over time.

Akku
A member of Solar, Akku was a particularly difficult person for Altais to befriend. He's kind by nature and not much of a fighter, all things Altais initially saw as weakness. Even as the others grew on her, she was always bitter towards Akku for being a dead weight, and a little afraid of him as his ability to see dynamis meant he could see what she really felt no matter how hard she tried to hide it. Over time he grew on her though, and as Altais learned to see his worth the two became close friends. Altais is often too harsh and Akku often too gentle so the two often trade advice that balances the other out.

Stephanivien
As the one who introduced Altais to engineering, he was initially her mentor but Altais's strong mind and exposure to Garlean tech in the field quickly had her catch up to him as an equal and even surpass him. The two remain close friends, often trading notes on weapon designs and rambling on about various ideas knowing they have each other as some of the few people out there who can keep up. Altais enjoys going to help the manufactory with projects when she has the time to.

Cid
While Altais values Cid for his magitek knowledge, their relationship can be a little rocky. They have very different ideas of what to use it for, Cid pursuing peaceful designs while Altais specializes in weaponry. This can easily cause them to argue, but the two still manage to maintain a healthy respect for each other trading books and designs when needed. At the end of the day, it's hard to hate one of the few people out there as well studied as yourself in a field though and the two of them do consider each other friends.

Trivia

- Altais is considered equal to Cid in the magitek engineering field.

- Each of her weapons has its own name in the Xaela language. The first gun she built was Ukhel (death), alongside a smaller handgun to keep nearby when she sleeps or in places where weapons are frowned upon named Kamgalach (protector). Once Ukhel broke, the gunblade that replaced it was named Tasralgi (unbroken).

- While her nameday is unknown, Akku eventually would choose a day based on when she joined Solar to celebrate it.
